The challenge: Megatrends are revolutionizing the operating environment of the mining industry

The mining industry faces major challenges. Geopolitical crises and environmental requirements are rising. The population is aging. At the same time, electrification and urbanization are driving up demand for metals and aggregates.

Environmental requirements are tightening while ore extraction is becoming more difficult as the quality of ore deposits decrease. This increases the need for solutions that can extract resources from the ground more efficiently and cleanly.

With an aging population, many skilled and experienced workers will retire soon from the mining industry. Fewer young people consider the industry an attractive career. This labor shortage creates demand for more efficient and automated solutions.

The solution: Remote monitoring and predictive maintenance

Data & AI Platform renewal - Metso's collaboration with Twoday began with the implementation of Snowflake technology in the renewal of their data and AI platform. This platform now serves as the foundation for several of Metso's analytics and remote monitoring projects.

Remote monitoring and predictive maintenance - Machine learning algorithms identify malfunctions and failures in equipment and enable predictive maintenance and remote services for Metso’s customers.

Expertise and insights in developing Data & AI solutions - Twoday's consultants work closely as part of Metso's own data and AI team offering their expertise and insights developing advanced Data and AI solutions.

"Developing the use of data and AI is at the core of our newly published strategy. The goal is to use more data in the future and develop AI-assisted services that help continuously monitor our equipment in the field and automatically notify customer and our experts if something unexpected happens. This way, our customers can improve their operations and avoid unexpected production interruptions, which can be very costly."

The Result: Data-driven performance services make mining more efficient and bring energy savings

Increased efficiency and cost savings: Predictive maintenance is reducing unexpected interruptions in mining and yielding significant cost savings and production efficiency gains.

Improved safety in mining: Automation and remote monitoring improve mine safety by reducing the need for on-site personnel.

More sustainable operations: Energy savings in the crushing processes of machines can be significant with automation, supporting more environmentally friendly operations. In one customer case, optimizing crusher settings achieved a 14% drop in milling-specific energy use, saving about 68 GWh annually.

Increased customer satisfaction: Metso's customers are highly satisfied with predictive maintenance and remote services, reporting reduced machine failures, less maintenance downtime, improved energy savings, and increased efficiency.

According to Janne Liuttu, Metso Minerals’ Data & AI Director, the collaboration with our experts has been going well, and they have provided the necessary expertise and insights for developing data and AI solutions:

"There are really good experts in the team who have insights into how to tackle challenges. It has been a very positive experience working with Twoday's experts".
