Using data to power smarter decisions and sustainable growth
Vy needed a partner to support their work on creating digital solutions for customers and operations, especially within application development and data and analysis. They selected Twoday as a strategic technology partner based on the company’s broad and comprehensive expertise, supporting Vy’s ambition to remain a leading transportation provider in the Nordic region.
Client: Vy
Industry: Government

A trusted Nordic partnership
Vy is the Nordic region’s largest land-based transport group, owned by the Norwegian state through the Ministry of Transport. The company is committed to delivering high-quality travel experiences through its services. Vy aims to enable more people to choose reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport.
Twoday and Vy have been partners since 2019. As Vy continues to strengthen its operational performance, Twoday has contributed with expertise and capacity to support the ongoing development and improvement of the group’s digital services. With customers at the heart of Vy’s ambition, we have worked closely together to ensure that data analysis, digital engineering, cloud platform enhancements, and application integrations translate into a better customer experience. Throughout the partnership, Vy and Twoday have shared a focus on building a stable, scalable, and high-performing digital platform, ensuring that technology enables progress rather than becoming a constraint.

Keeping travelers on track
Travelers in Norway and Sweden rely on accurate, real-time information to plan journeys, purchase tickets, and navigate disruptions across national transport networks. With data flowing from multiple sources and frequent operational changes, Vy must manage a complex digital ecosystem. With more than one million monthly app users expecting seamless access to routes, timetables, ticketing, and alerts, the company must deliver a unified experience that is fast, reliable, and easy to use. Meeting these expectations requires robust systems capable of largescale processing without compromising performance or user satisfaction.
Vy, in collaboration with Twoday, has developed and now operates its end-to-end digital platform for journey planning, ticketing, and customer-facing services. The real-time solution integrates data from Entur and Resrobot, supported by high-performance APIs for journey searches and designed to handle large volumes of live data.
Improving public transportation with machine learning
Vy operates in a data-rich public transport environment, where large volumes of real-time information offer significant opportunities for insight and improvement. To leverage and improve areas such as demand prediction, dynamic pricing, route optimization, predictive maintenance, and shift planning, Vy needed a structured and scalable approach to develop and deploy machine learning models. At the same time, fare evasion remains a significant issue, creating an unfair system where honest passengers subsidize those who do not buy tickets. Limited conductor capacity and reliance on manual judgment make consistent enforcement difficult, reducing revenues and potentially affecting service quality over time.
A dedicated AI team
To meet these challenges, Vy established a dedicated AI team with experts from both Vy and Twoday. The joint team has built a robust platform that enables end-to-end development, deployment, and management of machine learning models. The platform supports rapid start-up through tools like Databricks on AWS, API-based model exposure, and integrated storage, making AI initiatives easier to operationalize at scale. Leveraging this foundation, Vy and Twoday also developed a predictive model that identifies journey segments with a high likelihood of fare evasion. This provides conductors with data-driven insights for more targeted and effective checks. Early results show increased accuracy and reduced reliance on individual judgment. The model will be continuously refined to support ongoing, knowledge-driven improvements across Vy’s operations.
“In 2024, Vy transported 213 million passengers, saving society the equivalent of annual emissions of over 400,000 cars. By investing in digitalization, Vy is making it easier for customers to choose and use public transport.”
