A future-proof digital platform that powers progress

Project Kickoff
2021

In 2021, five regional energy companies joined forces to form Wattn – a modern, forward-thinking energy provider. To power this new organisation, they needed a digital platform that was not just functional, but foundational. It needed to be capable of scaling with the business, adapting to change, and enabling new opportunities in the dynamic and fast-evolving energy industry. That was when twoday came in.

twoday partnered with Wattn to develop a robust digital platform using cloud technology. Launched in 2021, it was built with a strong technical foundation designed to accommodate future innovation and integrations. The platform united multiple systems into a single, scalable environment – laying the groundwork for everything that would come next. Four years later, the results speak for themselves.

Future-proof in practice: Two major milestones

1. From single-tenant to multi-tenant

Over the years, what began as a platform for one company has evolved into a shared multi-tenant environment. The shift to shared architecture now means new partners – such as electricity resellers – can onboard seamlessly. Currently five partners have been set up in the new more generic platform. Furthermore, Wattn has been added as a partner. With the ability to integrate with third-party KIS systems, Wattn is turning its platform into a powerful enabler for business growth and partner collaboration.

Results

  • Economy of scale

  • Reduced maintenance

  • Simpler issue resolution

  • Improved partner experience

  • Standardized onboarding and hosting of partners

2. DevOps cooperation: Clearer roles, better decisions

As the platform developed and different suppliers were given access, there was a need for a shared understanding and mindset around the platform. To achieve this, twoday established a dedicated DevOps collaboration to ensure the right balance between ownership and responsibility in the different teams.

One of the main benefits has been that the infrastructure is now written as code. This is available to everyone but fully owned by Wattn. Not only does this improve planning and issue resolution, but it does so without compromising quality or security.

Results

  • Easier, safer upgrades

  • Stronger security governance

  • Clearer responsibilities between teams

  • Improved decision-making

The value of the collaboration

“Working in energy sector means that time pressures are constant. twoday has delivered on our business needs and been able to ramp up when required. Our collaboration has been a success – and not just the collaboration with us but also with the other partners involved in a system of this scale,” Thomas Fossum, Chief Digital Officer, Wattn.

Long-term impact

The platform has not only proven to be technically solid, but also strategically right. It continues to support Wattn’s mission of delivering sustainable energy solutions while remaining flexible enough to support future innovation.

Services delivered by twoday

Advisory – At the start of the project, each of the five companies used different KIS systems. twoday’s experts provided their mapping and technical advice on the right cloud solution that would enable Wattn to make cost-effective choices.

CMS – The public facing website wattn.no was developed using CRAFT CMS – a standardized system that could be customized to meet Wattn’s specific requirements.

System development – To meet the demands of Wattn’s private and commercial customers, services with API layers were created to enable the website and app to connect to data sources in a reliable and secure way.

Project management – twoday connected the dots during this fast-paced project, maintaining a clear overview and prioritizing where necessary to achieve the end goal. Alongside a project manager responsible for twoday deliveries, twoday supplied a second project manager for other vendor deliveries.
