Twoday wants to see more women and minority groups in the IT industry

-By Susan Dymling

More men than women naturally seek employment in the IT industry, but Twoday, one of the largest IT providers in the Nordic region, wants to change that. They are actively working to reduce the gap between age groups, minorities and sexual orientation.

The goal is for the workforce to reflect a cross-section of the population, as the solutions that Twoday develops and works with are used by all types of people.

"Then we also have to represent them. That's why it's hard to imagine anything other than a 50/50 gender distribution and a balanced distribution of the other diversity dimensions in our market," emphasizes Kristin Rotevatn Nyberg, CEO of Twoday Norway. She is convinced that there are still old prejudices around programming and IT.

Bring programming into the curriculum

- These are probably subjects that still appeal to men more than women. As a major player in the market, we must work to remove that perception, so that it becomes just as natural for young women to choose this career path. We have seen positive developments over the past ten years, but we are definitely not there yet. There are still significantly more men than women who choose programming as an elective subject in high school. That is a problem.

Nyberg is clear that things would have been different if programming had been included in the curriculum from grades 1 to 10.

- I think it would have resulted in more women and people with minority backgrounds in IT and IT studies. If it is up to parents to teach their children programming, we will get a completely skewed distribution in the field.

More role models in IT

- In addition to school, we will need attitude campaigns where we highlight role models and explain to young people what it means to work with IT. We don't just sit in front of a screen and program, so we have to show how important it is for society to have experts in data, as well as what values exist in the industry. We know roughly what doctors or teachers do, while IT people and engineers live an anonymous existence. It becomes too abstract!

Who are you looking for?

- The entire industry is growing rapidly, regardless of whether we are talking about the public sector, small and medium-sized enterprises or large companies, but the common thread is that we have to work smarter with the help of technology. In the public sector, the challenges and tasks are enormous. It is the data experts who can solve them and if the private sector is to succeed in competition with foreign countries, the same applies there. It is not only twodays' responsibility, but yes, we also need many smart heads, and there is room for them with us.

We create a better tomorrow through AI and technology.
