Keva’s modernized system cuts manual work and accelerates pension payments
Keva is the largest pension provider in Finland. It serves approximately 1.3 million individual customers, including around 617,000 pension recipients (as of 2025 statistics). Keva manages the pension matters of employees in Finland’s municipal sector, the state, the church, Kela, the Bank of Finland, and the well-being services counties.
We participated in a large and complex project to modernize and automate Keva’s pension payment system. The modernized system was completed at the end of 2025.
Client: Keva
Industry: Public sector
Location: Helsinki, Finland

The Challenge: Eliminating manual calculations and Excel files
Keva’s previous pension payment system had reached the end of its operational life. The goal was to modernize the solution so that it could meet today’s requirements and also support future needs.
A key focus in renewing the payment system was to automate as many processes as possible. Keva wanted to replace manual calculations and Excel-based work. At the same time, the system’s banking and tax authority integrations were updated to meet current standards. The project also created a strong foundation for improving digital self-service options for pension recipients in the future.
The Solution: Smooth collaboration and deep expertise ensured success
Keva’s payment system was implemented with a microservice architecture in the Azure cloud environment, using Java and Angular technologies. The required process engine was developed in-house as part of the project.
Professionals from several software companies participated in the project. From Twoday, the team included a Scrum Master, software developers, and a business analyst. The project followed agile methods and seamless collaboration was ensured, for example, by organizing joint in-person sessions.
Developing the pension payment system was a demanding task. Success was made possible by strong domain knowledge and a clear understanding of what the system needed to achieve. Insights were gained from analysts, testers, and Keva’s long-standing subject matter experts.
“Keva’s experts are walking knowledge banks. They understand how pension payments work and how everything connects. In a project like this, their expertise is absolutely invaluable,” says Twoday’s Mika Söyrinki, who served as Scrum Master in the project.
Pension payment processes include a large amount of domain-specific complexity that had to be addressed throughout the project. Over the decades, many types of calculation rules have been introduced due to regulatory changes, and the renewed system must continue to support all these variations.
The Results: The new system streamlines work and speeds up payment processing
For pension recipients, the payment system is essential because it ensures that pensions are paid correctly and on time.
The goal was to ensure that Keva could continue fulfilling its statutory duties and secure people’s income without the modernization being noticeable to customers. In other words, pensions should continue to be paid on time without interruptions. This goal was achieved as planned, and the new system has operated reliably without disruptions.
The new system helps tasks to be carried out more automatically and efficiently. It saves Keva’s resources by reducing manual work. When data moves automatically and consistently according to predefined rules, the risk of human error decreases, and payment processing becomes faster.
The Collaboration: Seamless teamwork and strong team spirit
According to Keva’s IT Manager, Kalle Kannisto, collaboration throughout the project was exceptionally smooth. All partners and Keva’s own experts worked together toward a shared goal. Team spirit and job satisfaction remained high, even though the project was unusually large, involving up to 50 people from twelve partner organizations at its peak.
“Our collaboration with Twoday has gone very well. Twoday played an important role not only in building the technical side of the project, but also in fostering a positive team spirit and constructive working atmosphere. Twoday’s experts held various roles across the entire project organization, and their contribution has had a significant impact. Their collaboration skills and ability to work across organizational boundaries have been essential. These factors cannot be overstated in a project of this scale. We also value Twoday’s long-term commitment and deep expertise in their respective fields.”
