Meet Niklas

Global Senior Engineer | Twoday Sweden

Niklas Gustafsson

"I pushed myself to learn fast. Sometimes with pretty weird methods, just to get those ‘aha’ moments."

Niklas Gustafsson didn’t grow up dreaming of a tech career. In fact, he entered the field later than most. He was 27 when he started coding, surrounded by classmates several years younger and already ahead. But he had something else on his side: determination and curiosity.

“I felt behind at first,” he says. “So I pushed myself to learn fast. Sometimes with pretty weird methods, just to get those ‘aha’ moments.”

For Niklas, learning has always been hands-on. He prefers digging into real problems until things click. That mindset still shapes how he works today.

From shop owner to developer

Before tech, Niklas ran a small shop in Gothenburg selling fair-trade and organic clothes. With a business that size, he had to do everything himself. Ordering products was especially frustrating. Suppliers didn’t have proper systems, only Excel sheets and emails. If he didn’t place orders immediately, he missed out on stock.

“I remember thinking, why can’t I just order like a normal customer?” he says. That irritation became the spark. He started learning to code so he could build better solutions for his own needs. What began as a practical fix turned into a career shift.

His short time studying philosophy also played a role. Abstract thinking, logic, and creating structures for things that don’t yet exist felt surprisingly close to programming. “That connection made programming click for me,” he explains.

Learning by doing

Niklas chose a practical education path at YRGO, focused on real company projects. From there, he moved through internships and consulting roles at Capgemini, Volvo Cars, SKF, and later Avanade in Norway. Each step added perspective rather than locking him into one niche.

He has worked across frontend, mobile apps, and tech leadership. At Annevo, a Nordic digital consultancy that later became part of Twoday, he took on tech lead responsibilities and eventually became Head of Tech, supporting sales, customers, and internal teams.

One lesson stayed constant. “Be kind, open, and give customers options. Make it easy for them to act on your ideas.”

Seeing the bigger picture

Today, Niklas describes himself as someone who connects dots. He may not claim to be the most technical person in the room, but he sees patterns, opportunities, and practical paths forward.

His focus is on what works in reality. Not just perfect systems, but useful ones. Standardization has its place, he says, but it can also slow things down. He prefers solutions that meet people where they are now.

This mindset connects closely to Twoday’s “Lead by Design” approach. Bringing the design and technology together, simplifying complexity, and making technology usable.

“AI is a good example,” Niklas says. “It’s huge and confusing. The real question is how to bring value to clients and keep their data safe.”

“Everyone asks what AI can do for them. We can help them find real answers, not just hype.”

What matters most

Niklas is especially interested in AI and how it can create real, practical value. He wants to stay hands-on, testing tools, understanding what works, and helping clients navigate the noise. “Everyone asks what AI can do for them. We can help them find real answers, not just hype.”

For him, technology is never just about the tools. It’s about people, usefulness, and staying curious. Maybe that’s what defines his journey best. Not a straight line, but a series of questions, experiments, and moments where things suddenly made sense.

Curious enough to question how things are done and build something better?
