Since ChatGPT broke through a few years ago, both Microsoft, Google and several other vendors have released their own chatbots. But what sets them apart? Below, we compare the three most popular chatbots on the market: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini, so you can more easily find the best solution for your needs.
ChatGPT – the pioneer in generative AI
When OpenAI first launched ChatGPT in late 2022, a new world emerged. In just two months, the platform had over 100 million users, and suddenly everyone was talking about generative AI. The concept became a hot topic at the dinner tables and a natural part of our daily lives.
The GPT-3.5 language model became popular for its ability to generate text and converse in a way that felt natural. It also supports many different languages, which is advantageous if you work in an international organization.
A few years later, the tool has been updated and further improved. Among other things, the GPT-4 language model is now available for free use (though with a limit of about 15 messages every three hours). However, to access extra features such as image generation with DALL-E and document reading, you need to be a Plus subscriber. You can also create your own customized versions of ChatGPT, tailored for specific tasks or needs.
Advantages:
- Free use
- User friendly
- Natural interaction
- Supports different languages
Disadvantages:
- Free version limits messages
- Extra features require Plus-subscribtion
Copilot – when you prefer Microsoft
Copilot, originally designed as the GitHub code assistant, has evolved into a versatile AI tool available as a web and mobile app, without the need to register an account for use.
Copilot is powered by the GPT-4 language model and integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Bing's search engine, providing answers with references and web links—something particularly useful if you want to minimize the risk of AI hallucinations. The tool also offers useful suggestions for prompts, making it easy for users to get started.
However, the free version of Copilot is limited to a few responses per conversation and up to 4,000 characters per prompt. With a paid account, you can access more advanced features, such as more comprehensive answers and an improved user experience across the Microsoft platform.
Advantages:
- Uses the GPT-4 language model
- Seamless integration with the Microsoft platform
- Ability to provide answers with references
- User-friendly chatbot with prompt suggestions
Disadvantages:
- Limited number of sessions with the free version
Gemini – for the complete Google experience
Gemini, Google’s counterpart to ChatGPT, was introduced in 2023, promising both advanced features and an intuitive user experience.
The chatbot, initially called Bard, uses the latest version of Google's own language model and is available as both a web and mobile app. The tool not only offers fast and precise answers without session limitations but also the ability to generate images and upload photos thanks to integration with Google Lens.
Gemini is free to use, but the paid version, included in the subscription service, offers several benefits, such as access to an upgraded language model and cloud storage. Regardless of which version you choose, the interface is user-friendly and similar to what you may already be familiar with from ChatGPT.
Something important to know is that, unlike ChatGPT and Copilot, Gemini uses Google’s search engine as its source of information. This means that the quality of the answers is directly tied to the quality of the search results, and what Gemini cannot find on Google, it cannot answer.
Gemini becomes especially useful if you already use other Google products. You can also add extensions that support a wide range of Google apps, making Gemini an increasingly integrated part of the Google experience.
Advantages:
- Seamless integration with other Google
products - Unlimited number of sessions in
- the free versionImage upload functionality in the free version
Disadvantages:
- Gemini's knowledge base is directly tied to Google’s search results
Which chatbot best suits your needs?
Ultimately, choosing an AI chatbot is not just about functionality, but about finding the tool that best adapts to your needs and that you enjoy using, whether you prioritize customization, integration, or user-friendliness. Before making a choice, it might be worth considering:
- How your organization is structured
- What systems and tools you already use
- What specific tasks you have
